Biography

I am a fashion journalist, author and editor with more than 30 years experience working for British newspapers and magazines, including Tank and the Guardian. I began my career at the Independent in 1991 and became Fashion Editor in 1995, working across the daily newspaper and the Saturday Magazine. In 1998 I became the Observer Magazine's Style Editor, writing about design, interiors and fashion before moving to the Telegraph Magazine as Fashion Features Director.

My interest in how the industry is impacting people and the planet has developed throughout my career, and has become integral to my work as a journalist and as an advocate for a clean, fair and more transparent fashion industry as special projects curator for Fashion Revolution. Between 2017-2023, I was the curator of Fashion Open Studio, the global showcasing and mentoring platform designed to highlight the work of emerging designers working in innovative and regenerative ways.

I have written several books, including Dressing Diana (Weidenfeld, 1998), Fashion & Graphics (Laurence King, 2004), Green is the New Black – How to Change the World with Style (Hodder & Stoughton, 2007), and 100 Women 100 Styles (Laurence King, 2019). I still work as a freelance journalist for a range of publications, including the Guardian, 10 and The Gentlewoman. Since 2019, I have been the editor of the independent biannual Hole & Corner magazine.

Since 2016, I have been an Associate Lecturer at Central Saint Martins, teaching on BA  Fashion Communication: Journalism. I am also editorial director for the recently reformed Estethica, consulting with brands and organisations to create change within the fashion industry. I have been a mentor and advisor for the annual Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Prize at Hyeres Fashion Festival since 2021. With Fashion Open Studio and Not Enough Collective____, I was part of the co-curation team for Arnhem's State of Fashion 2022 Biennale, Ways of Caring. I am also currently part of the mentoring team for the inaugural cohort of the Paul Smith Foundation's Fashion Residency.
