Biography

Honorary Doctor

Loyle Carner is a rap artist known for his introspective sound. His music explores themes of personal identity, politics, family and tragedy, while his languid style forms a contemporary genre of UK rap inspired by American hip-hop and UK grime. Through his gifted lyricism, his work is elevated into new realms of art.

After graduating from secondary education, Loyle secured a scholarship for the Brit School — whose alumnae include Adele and Amy Winehouse — and started an acting degree. However, halfway through following the untimely death of his stepfather, he shifted his focus to music.

Since leaving the Brit School, Loyle has released three critically acclaimed studio albums. Two of them, his debut Yesterday’s Gone (2017) and hugo (2020), garnered him nominations for the 2017 and 2023 Mercury Prize, respectively. He has also been nominated for three Brit Awards and was selected to curate and headline the All Points East music festival taking place in London’s Victoria Park in August 2024.

In addition to his impressive repertoire, Loyle’s early diagnosis of ADHD and dyslexia has inspired him to support young people struggling with the same. An example of this being Chilli Con Carner, a series of cookery workshops for young people with ADHD.
