Course description
Through a combination of lectures, practical exercises and hands-on activities, this 5-week evening course will teach you how to develop different styles of dresses from a size 12 block pattern.
During the course, you will learn pattern cutting techniques that are transferable to other garments, while exploring the various dress styles and pattern-cutting techniques and adapting these patterns for various dress styles.
This course has been designed for complete beginners wanting to start exploring pattern cutting techniques and pattern making. It would also be a great choice for anyone with pattern making experience who would like to learn more about this garment style and improve their skills.
Course outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Add style lines
- Dart manipulation
- Add a yoke to a pattern
- Add pleats to a pattern
- Add gathers to a pattern
- Create a facing

This 5-week evening course is aimed at designers, creatives, and entrepreneurs in the creative or fashion industries interested in developing patterns.
It would also be an excellent fit for individuals who are new to the Fashion industry or who aspire to work in it and want to learn more about creating patterns. You would want to do this course if you would like to be able to create your own styles.

- Induction to the studios and college fashion spaces
- How to copy a dress block pattern and starting dart manipulation
- Developing dress styles 1 & 2
- Developing dress styles 3 & 4
- Developing dress sleeves for dress styles 1,2,3 & 4
- Experimenting with your own design, develop a dress pattern using learnt techniques

Please bring with you to the first session:
- A pen and notebook
- Pattern Master
- Paper scissors
- Tape measure
- Tracing wheel
- Pattern awl
- Pencils (H2 or 0.9 mechanical)
- Eraser
- Pencil sharper
- Masking tape or Magic tape
- Pins (medium)
- Colour pencils (5 different colours)
