University of the Arts London work in partnership with BaxterStorey to deliver catering services in our 7 campuses across London.
Our team of award-winning chefs regularly curate the menus to guarantee a fresh, sustainable and affordable food and drinks offer for our students and staff.
Sustainability
Sustainability is right at the heart of our Food Policy at UAL. As champions of ethically sourced, environmentally friendly food and working with local producers, we are the only university to receive the ‘Gold Food for Life Served Here’ award and now hold the Green Kitchen award from the Soil Association.
We choose seasonal produce because it tastes better and is more nutritious as the product is at the peak of its growing cycle, so the natural sugars, vitamins and nutrients are at their maximum.

Our food
Every day our food is freshly cooked by professional chefs and includes a minimum of 15% organic and 5% free-range ingredients. We offer a variety of concepts including timeless classics, student favourites, celebratory food, guest-chef experiences and trendy pop-ups.
Our food is simple yet nutritional and meal prices start from as low as £3.25. Our homemade soup and bread is £3.25 or the Campus Special is £3.95. This was the cheapest price point for a hot meal when compared to other London universities (Autumn 2024).
We also run termly offers, promotions and meal deals which are relevant to the season and time of the day.
Our drinks
We serve speciality coffee provided by Extract Coffee Roasters and Benugo who both keep direct trade relationships with all their coffee farmers and cooperatives supporting entire communities.
We also offer a rotating selection of teas, soft drinks, and seasonal specials. We work with new brands and flavours that keeps our menu fresh and exciting.
UAL is the first university in the UK to receive the Gold Food for Life Catering Mark award by the Soil Association across all canteen outlets at the 6 Colleges.

Prices
With the aim to break even annually and to keep costs down for our students, we don’t make any profit from our canteens and cafés. Prices do not differ between campuses other than the Benugo café at East Bank (Ground floor) serving trademark products of another business (Benugo).
Our prices are reviewed annually. Many factors are taken into consideration during the annual review, including the cost of the ingredients, energy prices, labour costs and overhead costs.
We also benchmark the prices of core menu items across 9 other London universities. In 2024/25 UAL pricing is 2% below the average selling price of these other universities and the 6th least expensive, plus we are the only university to offer Food for Life Gold in terms of quality. Overall, our prices increased by 3.2% for 2024/25 and 7.8% in 2023/24, which is considerably lower than inflation rates. This means we provide high quality food, that is healthy, ethical and uses lots of fresh ingredients.
We choose seasonal produce because it tastes better and it has a big environmental impact. We buy from local suppliers wherever possible to help reduces our food mileage and support local communities and businesses.
Our food offer includes less animal protein and more plant-based protein, which means 70% of what we serve is either vegetarian or vegan. Part of our daily canteen service includes hot food, national dishes, Grab and Go meals (baguettes, wraps, panini, salads…), vegan soups and snacks.
Our suppliers
Every dish listed in our menu takes into consideration not only the nutritional value, affordability and seasonality of the ingredients but also sustainable provenance with ethical welfare standards. We are proud to be part of food accreditation schemes such as: Soil Organic Association, Assured Food Standards, RSPCA assured, Certified Sustainable seafood. We strive to source regional ingredients to help reduce our food mileage and make a difference to the local community, wherever we operate or source.
Dietary requirements
Gluten Free
Whilst we prepare some dishes that do not contain gluten as an ingredient, our kitchens are not gluten-free environments. As gluten is present in our kitchen, there is a risk of cross-contamination through airborne particles or shared equipment. We have trained Allergen Champions on-site who are knowledgeable about allergens and intolerances. They can discuss specific dietary needs and provide information on dishes prepared by our chefs.
Halal meat
We serve Halal chicken in our canteens, depending on availability from our suppliers. While we strive to offer Halal options whenever possible, our meat providers cannot always guarantee this. For this reason, we only label chicken as Halal on our daily menus when we can confirm it meets the necessary requirements.
Accessibility
Our catering sites are accessible and are either located on the ground floor or upper levels which can be reached by using the stairs or the lifts.
Feedback
We always welcome feedback from our customers. An online feedback form is in place for you to access anonymously every time you visit any of our catering spaces at UAL. You can scan the QR code from the signs located at the seating area of our cafés and canteens. In addition to this, the catering team hosts a different survey with multiple questions on site twice a year.
