What does the future sound like? Zine-making workshop

Join Eva Dieteren for a creative zine-making workshop exploring sound, culture, and imagination.

Zines are self-published, handmade objects: cut, collaged, and assembled with whatever is at hand. Small in format but boundless in scope, they have been a medium for imagining otherwise, with rich histories in both science fiction and music subcultures such as the 1970s punk and 1990s riot grrrrl movements. In this workshop, we bring those two traditions into conversation with each other, using the zine as a vehicle for speculative storytelling about sound and imagined futures.

We'll begin with a short introduction to zine-making and these intersecting histories, before diving into the making itself. Guided by the prompt What does the future sound like?, you'll craft your own zine around a speculative story rooted in music, sound, or listening. Zine-making has always been a communal act, and in this workshop that's exactly how we do it: brainstorming together, sharing ideas, and celebrating each other's creations along the way.

Come ready to imagine, write, cut, and collage!

No prior experience necessary. Materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own crafty materials if you like!

This event is free and open to all, please sign up in advance as spaces are limited!

The event will take place in Mezzanineon the ground floor.

Taking place at the same time, we will also be hosting a live DJ set by Seena Shamsavari, featuring female-fronted pop, rock and disco celebrating iconic Black divas of the 70s, 80s and 90s. This event will take place in the Atelier Space on the ground floor. Find out more here.
